A Quote by Tagore – Echo and Original

 By Somali K Chakrabarti

The echo mocks her origin

To prove she is the original.

~ Rabindranath Tagore

This quote delves into human psyche and finds universal relevance.

In the image we see that reflection is so similar to the original that it is difficult to tell apart the shadow from its origin.

Similarly, rebounding echoes can create confusion, which makes it difficult to distinguish between the original sound and the reverberation. The phenomenon is also applicable to emotions, the distinction between emotions and remembered emotions being complex. Sometimes, after a moment passes, the remembered emotions resurface, and memories of the moment leave a stronger impact than the moment itself .

The universal relevance of the echo phenomenon can even be found in today’s competitive marketplace. Copies, we see, are often louder than original, and duplicates find their place in the market.

The quote is taken from the book ‘Stray Birds‘ , a collection of short poems and aphorisms written by Tagore. In the poems, Tagore draws inspiration from nature and describes the splendor of nature, in a way so beautiful that it soothes the soul. The short, simple and lucid verses flow with ease, leaving a lingering memory in the heart and mind.

  1. All his quotes are so profound…:-)

It really makes me feel in the way that there’s actually no feeling, no emotion, no thought in the world, of which Tagore has not written a word. I read his words when I’m happy, I find my solace in his lines when I’m sad..he is there always with me….

    Loved the way you’ve explained it… (y)
