Spotted Deer – A Tanka

Spotted Deer

Curved antlers, round spots

shine bright on the velvet skin,

The delicate doe

nibbles in the meadow at

smallest sound ready to spring!

Spotted deer, also known as Chital or the Axis Deer are found in the  foothills of Himalayas and in Madhya Pradesh. With bright spots on its body, the Spotted deer is the most beautiful of all deer species. Mostly found in small herds of 20 – 30, the Spotted Deer share a special relationship with langur monkeys, feeding on the leaves and tender shoots which the monkeys drop on the ground. The deer make use of the alarm call given by the monkeys to alert themselves against the predators.

Tanka is a Japanese form of non-rhymed lyrical poem consisting of 5 lines. A tanka in English follows a short-long-short-long–long pattern.
