Fissures and Faults

The tranquil facade

camouflages fissures deep

masks the peril of 

a rupture or fault, at times

a tectonic drift!

Þingvellir is a place in southwestern Iceland.  It lies in a rift valley and is notable for its unusual tectonic activities. The continental drift between the North American and Eurasian Plates can be seen in the cracks or faults which traverse the region. Some of the rifts are full of clear water. One such rift is Peningagjá (lit. “coin fissure”), as its bottom is littered with coins.


A Tanka is a Japanese poem consisting of 31 syllables in 5 lines, with 5 syllables in the first and third lines and 7 in the rest.
