Feline Quotes

Sometime back, I had written a post on ‘Po’ – The Little Kitten. It happens so that the playful kitten Po, now grown up by a few months,  has landed up at my house, and is keeping me on my toes.  As we are adjusting to each other’s presence, most of my time now goes in watching its antics.

The kitten has peculiar habits with strange feline ways of communicating and emoting. There is a silent mystery about the creature as it disappears within the flash of a second and sneaks into the weirdest corners of the house, finding a new place to hide every day. At other times, it makes itself particularly endearing by playfully rolling on its back and rubbing its head on our feet and purring, on being petted.

It butts its head, suddenly comes running and bumps me, sits on my desk, does high five, stares continuously and then blinks, curls up and sulks when scolded.  Going by the saying that when a cat bumps you and rubs against you, they “claim” you by leaving a bit of their musk on you, ‘Po’ seemed to have claimed our house with the inmates.

There are moments when Po exhibits bursts of intense dashing through the house for reasons best known to him. He plays the hunt and chase game with paper balls or soft toys and is very curious about everything that goes on inside the house. Yes, he also scratches furniture for territorial marking, and jumps out of the windows at the first opportunity but is extremely scared to go out of the door.

Most of our discussions at home these days are oddly centered around the cat.

While trying to dig out about the behavioral traits of cats, I came across several quotes on cats. I am listing here the ones that I found particularly interesting.

How I concur with these! The more I look into the inscrutable black eyes of the kitten, the more I feel obliged to take care of  it. 😀

  1. I’ve always been a cat lover. Your quotes help me understand why even more. My black cat, Paris, has the habit of waking me around 4 a.m. to watch her eat, even though food is already in the bowl.

    1. Wow Sue. ,..you must be understanding them quite well then. Though I was always fond of pets , this is is the first time I am having a pet at home. He comes up with some new mischief each day, and then gives such an innocent look. 🙂 Love and good wishes. Somali

  13. Somali, there is a subtle layer of beautiful poetry in the narration. I loved the lovely description of the constant encounter and engagement with Po. Life is all about growth and there is a that authoritative demonstration of energy and enthusiasm with age. Po is just doing that with the child within in action, where as in human, the child within us goes to permanent hibernation as we become adult. We keep writing and sharing our relationship and the reactions and responds of dog, we are used to it. But yes, cats are no less and they have their own style and they follow their own pattern, there is grace and there is that composure, they behave no less that the majestic tiger…yes we see them as our control on the ferocious tiger which can see at a distance with awe and wander.

    Cats are domesticated and we attempt to have a full control over them, but there is a myth, as you have so nicely described their behavior and actions, the movements, the hide and seek they play and the way they push us when they don’t us and pull us when they need something…not selfish but they want our attention and they want us to curdle them and care for them, they are no less than the lady love we wants our attention and who wants to be admired and appreciated.

    All quotes are equally powerful, just to pick one out of the lot, the quote by Pam Brown gives a wonderful perspective, they are want we are not, and precisely why we are attracted by them, they are opposite to what we are, indeed they are elegant, they are glad in their company, they are relaxed, assured and self contained which we are rarely these days where we almost invariably lost in wilderness and in the world wide web…we are caught in cobweb of life and it’s mystery.

    I can understand Somali, weekends are hence no more free, Po must be at the center of action and joy lies in playing and witnessing those moments that can only be experienced not described.

      1. See-ing as in x-raying its feelings, motives and quirks? So what made you pick a cat for a pet? I’ve been told they make great pets since they are so low maintenance. They clean themselves, don’t get emotionally attached, don’t expect daily walks etc.

        1. I didn’t pick it up. My daughter and her friends picked it up at Manipal and it has now landed up with me. Now that I have spent a month studying the cat psychology one thing I can say is that kittens are very sensitive and do get quite emotionally attached and even stressed out when they have to cope with changes but the way they express it very different from that of dogs.
