10 Quotes on the Joys of a Good Conversation

 By Somali K Chakrabarti

Stimulating Conversations

Some conversations flow spontaneously, create uplifting vibes, and leave you upbeat and energized. These conversations go beyond the icebreakers, normal pleasantries, small talks and jokes, discussions on mundane matters, or venting out problems and happen to be more engaging, and mentally stimulating. Possibly because these conversations are around things that we may care deeply about or may help us to discover new things about ourselves, or to develop new perspectives. While silly chatter with close friends often help to unwind, engaging conversations reveal the depth of one’s personality and sometimes they may leave a deep impression on the mind.

Good conversation is as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after.  — Anne Morrow Lindbergh.

Good questions and the willingness to listen are at the foundation of a stimulating conversation. It is hard to fake an engaging conversations, and not everybody wants to have deep conversations. Some may not have the inclination or find it too taxing or boring to have an engaging conversation on a topic that may interest the other person. While social conversations help us to connect with a broad set of people, engaging conversations can help us to broaden our outlook.

Here’s a collection of my favourite quotes on the joys of a good conversation:

  1. One good conversation can shift the direction of change forever. ~ Linda Lam

  2. A conversation is so much more than words, a conversation is eyes, smiles, the silences between the words. ~ Annika Thor

  3. I love when conversations and energies just flow. Not forced. Not coerced. Just present. ~ Dav Voire

  4. The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. ~ Dorothy Nevil

  5. Let the conversation flow at its own pace. Don’t try to rush it or control it. You need to let go and be a part of the conversation. ~ Max Weiss

  6. The true spirit of conversation consists in building on another man’s observation, not overturning it. ~ Edward G Bulwer-Lytton

  7. Good conversations turn me on. A connection between two people. A mental one first. ~ Brian Molko

  8. The right word at the right time will unlock the door to treasures – the wrong one will close it forever. ~ Rasheed Ogunlaru

The last two are almost poetic

  9. Conversation may be compared to a lyre with seven chords – philosophy, art, poetry, love, scandal, and the weather. ~ Anna Jameson

  10. Night air, good conversation, and a sky full of stars can heal almost any wound. ~ Beau Taplin

When was it that you last felt elated after having a good conversation?

  1. This is so true….. good conversations help us relax while the bad ones are like bad tasting foods that leave behind unpleasant memories. Living in US, I am thankful to some close friends who with their talks have helped me in times of loneliness. I am not very talkative but am a good listener. 🙂

  2. Nice theme Somali and this really stirred me up as over the years, I have had so many conversations – some serious, some funny, some outright rubbish to the extent of gibberishness. On many occasions, I have been part of tete a tetes that are one sided while I mentally give my thoughts and opinions! and also when I put up smiling expressions despite it to be dull, drab and boring.
The most interesting conversation happened when me and my friends were travelling by the local town bus back from college, literally letting our hair down with the talks and obviously in our elements and eventually it centered around our Business Environemnt and law madam who was given the sobriquet of “BEL amma”. We were having the time of our lives by nit picking her for a lot of things, little realizing that all during the conversation, she was sitting right behind us and listening in. When we had our say, she just got up and told us that she thanked all of us for the “Very honest feedback”!!!

    1. This one had me grinning all the way. From one sided tete a tete with yourself ( which I also happen to do very often) to pouring your hearts out about BEL amma, within her hearing range. Must say that madam seems to be very graceful in taking the feedback. Trying to imagine your expressions after she thanked you. 🙂

  3. “The air of ideas is the only air worth breathing”…I have been missing the ‘air of ideas’ for long!
Long back I had read an excellent piece, (the name of the author now eludes me), ‘Good conversation is an art, it has to be handled carefully, making an edifice of ideas…from one mind to another.’
Where is good conversation these days? Probably the definition of conversation has never been understood or nobody cares? These quotes are a good reminder Somali. Thank you for sharing, all of them make a point. Out of these, second one is my favorite.

Beautiful and enlightening post, Somali. My grandmother used to say,” There’s a reason why we have two ears and one mouth.” To really listen to a person is a gift no one would want to return. Thank you for your wisdom. ❤

  5. Conversations and letters! I feel the same way when I write or receive letters. I also have friends with whom I exchange e-mails like letters. They leave a mail, I read them when I am absolutely free and reply as and when I am in the right mindset. So there is always a conversation happening in that medium.

As one of the quotes put it, it is indeed a turn on! Sometimes, I have tried to control the conversation. End it so that I could continue the next day so we could keep talking. But I realised that it was everything including the moment that induced it and controlling it means losing it.
Being a lover of conversations, I enjoyed all these quotes. Nice collection 🙂

    1. Thank you Ranjini. Yes conversations that are based on exchange of ideas and build upon them are indeed a turn on. Also as you have pointed out we need to be in the right frame of mind to have an engaging / stimulating conversation.

  7. Somali, I had read this post earlier and I wanted to read few more times before I shared my thoughts, and the share my perspective, it was such a riveting topic and the subtle thoughts was artistically embedded in a magical fashion, everything in the post is simply awe-inspiring. The topic of “good conversation” is very close to my heart and I have always yearned for such good and engaging conversations. I have always enjoyed any form of intelligent and inspiring discussion, perhaps the bounty of living and life’s beauty resides in the art of good conversation. There is so much into a good conversation, not easily fathomed and figured out by most of us unless we are deeply experienced and engaged in such interaction. So rightly said it is about the art of questioning and the power of listening, never easy to put the right question in a discussion and never easy to acquire the skill of a good listener. Silence between the words. In fact good conversation is not just about the topic and knowledge but about the way we express, pose, posture to response to appreciate, and so much intangibles then the tangibles we keep harping on…

A good conversation, it is indeed intoxicating and highly energizing, it hold us back, it drives us and it takes us places, it ignites, there is a spark and there is space to play around. It is a beautiful feeling, the emotions get the motions and the egos goes out of the window, and there is a world of opportunity that emerges in such engaging good conversations. Each of the quotes chosen by you are powerful by itself, difficult to separate them and compare one to other, each has a context and each has message which can make us take a seed and grow a tree of thoughts…and top of it I love coffee and I have many times gone through such lovely conversations with friends with a cup of coffee, it is indeed stimulating and intoxicating…

Thanks so much Somali for sharing such an emotionally stirring post so close to my heart and making me feel elated, this is my first comment on any post this new year, also break away from the drought on my commenting practice of last year. I couldn’t have a better space to commence my new year…
Always a pleasure reading such powerful posts from your desk.
    Take Care!!!
